After church today, I talked briefly to a man who sings in the choir with me. He’s one of the oldest members of the church (and has a Facebook account!). I complimented him on his silver tie and coordinating dark gray shirt that had a white collar. “You’re looking sharp today.”
He thanked me and started to walk away. Then he turned back to me and pointed out the wings pinned to his tie. “Do you know what these wings are?” I shook my head no. “I graduated from flight school in 1942, the same year that I married my wife. She wore these wings on our wedding day.” He had tears in his eyes. I didn’t know what to say, so I patted him on the shoulder instead. I wished I had known his wife.
He turned to leave again, but he looked back with a smile on his face.
“Gotta wear them as often as I can.”
